The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent warning on counterfeit Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75 mg) emergency contraceptive pills circulating in Nigeria, posing serious health risks.

NAFDAC identified two fake batches—Type 1 (batch T36184B, manufactured August 2024, expiring August 2028) and Type 2 (batch 332, manufactured March 2023, expiring February 2027)—both falsely bearing the registration number 04-6985.

The authentic batch, T32458H, was manufactured in February 2023 and expires in February 2027.

The fakes show spelling errors like “Veify” instead of “Verify” and “Distnibuted” instead of “Distributed” on packaging, with smaller font sizes on verification stickers.

The Society for Family Health, the product’s authorization holder, confirmed it did not import these batches.

NAFDAC further warns that the counterfeit pills may contain harmful ingredients, incorrect dosages, or lack sterile manufacturing, risking failed contraception, allergic reactions, organ damage, or death.

“These fakes are unregulated and dangerous,” - NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

NAFDAC has ordered nationwide surveillance to seize the counterfeit products and urged consumers to buy Postinor-2 only from verified pharmacies, check PIN stickers, and report suspicious products.
